Mourners not adhering to funeral lockdown regulations

The Eastern Cape Government has urged members of the community to adhere to the current lockdown regulations to curb the spread of COVID19.

Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba especially called on bereaved families and communities to stop organizing funerals with large numbers of people.

The current regulations allow for 50 people to be present which includes the undertakers and other support staff.

Several people in the Eastern Cape have tested positive for COVID19 after attending a funeral.

On Thursday, the mayor of the Chris Hani District Municipality in the Eastern Cape, Wongama Gela, expressed his concern over the rising number of positive cases in his area.

This, after 19 people in the Bankies Village in the Emalahleni Municipality, tested positive for the virus, bringing the number of cases in the District to 21.

Mayor Gela says there was a funeral in the village which was attended by more than 50 people who also did not complete an attendance register.

Four people have already died from the virus in the Province including a 65-year-old woman from Butterworth who attended a funeral in Port St Johns.

In the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, officials are still urgently looking for people who might have attended a funeral in Zwide on the 21st of March.

Anybody who may have attended a funeral and suddenly developed flu-like symptoms should call the 24-hour toll - free number 08000 32364.

The government says some arrests have already been made at funerals where lockdown regulations were not adhered to and arrests will continue.
