Mount Ayliff police arrest 5 suspects following violent protest

Police at Mount Ayliff in the Transkei have arrested five suspects on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and arson.

Captain Mlungisi Matidane says the suspects were arrested earlier on Monday following a protest that broke out at Sigidini Administrative Area.

Matidane says about 300 angry community members blockaded the main road and burnt tyres.

Residents were reportedly protesting at the failure of the municipality to activate electricity connections which were installed  some time ago.

Matidane says protestors also set alight a municipal storage shack and threw stones at a municipal truck and a police vehicle.

Police are continuing to monitor the area.

The suspects, all women, aged 23 to 28 will appear in the Mount Ayliff Magistrates court on Wednesday.
