A local government Councillor travelling on the road between PE and Uitenhage told about a harrowing experience when a motorists encountered protesters trying to block the road a short while ago
DA Councillor in Sundays River Valley, Karen Smith, says she left Port Elizabeth a short while ago when she and other motorists passed a police vehicle on the side of the road near Dora Nginza Hospital where a group of people were in the road.
She says a few hundred metres further on they encountered a few people who were dragging burning tyres, rubble and tree stumps into the road.
Smith picks up the story.
"We were pretty much trapped then a guy in two or three vehicles in front of me, pulled out a gun. He pointed it at the protesters and they ran away. We managed to get through the blockage. It was a really frightening experience, there is a different way to fix things. I am just glad nobody got hurt this morning"
Police have had their hands full over the past two days dealing with people blocking the busy PE to Uitenhage road.
Two people were arrested on Tuesday on charges of public violence.
The protest is believed to be related to service delivery issues.
