Two people were killed in a horrific accident on the N2 near Ebenezer in Plettenberg Bay on Saturday.
Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says a preliminary investigation reveals that an Opel Corsa with two occupants, was travelling on the N2, towards Plett, when they overtook several vehicles at high speed, with their headlights switched off.
He says the driver then lost control and collided head-on with an Avanza travelling in the opposite direction in the oncoming lane.
Captain Pojie says the Avanza caught fire following the impact of the collision and a witness, who was another motorist, managed to help three passengers to safety.
The driver of the Avanza died on impact.
He was identified as Desmond Jack, who was a resident of Plett.
Captain Pojie says one of the occupants of the Corsa was found deceased underneath the vehicle.
He says the second occupant of the car "miraculously disappeared" from the scene.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide and have appealed to members of the public to assist them in locating the missing person.
Plettenberg Bay SAPS Station Commander, Col Michael Tailor has expressed his gratitude towards the vigilance and prompt action taken by the witness who had put his own life at risk to safe those who faced death in the face of a raging fire.
The identity of the deceased from the Corsa is not yet known.
