A motorist who was standing outside his car at a filling station in Motherwell on Wednesday morning was blindsided when a suspect jumped into his vehicle and sped off.
Nelson Mandela Bay police spokesperson Sandra Janse van Rensburg says the complainant was having a casual chat with the petrol attendant just after 6 am when the incident occurred.
She says the motorist immediately alerted police and the registration number of his green Polo classic was circulated via police channels.
Captain Janse van Rensburg says at approximately 7 am, members of Humewood SAPS were on patrol in Richmond Hill when they spotted the vehicle.
She says when they tried to pull it over the suspect sped off, crossing a pavement into Russell Road towards the M4.
The 36-year-old suspect collided with a white Mercedes Benz lost control of the vehicle and also collided with a silver Caravel Minibus.
He was arrested at the scene and will appear in court soon on a charge of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and reckless and negligent driving.
