Mother and co-accused in court on human trafficking charges

The two Pakistani nationals 32-year-old Tanvar Kahman and the 36-year-old Rome Mohammed

Hawks

Three people appeared in court in Keiskammahoek on Friday on charges that relate to human trafficking.

The Hawks said that the case against the two Pakistani nationals 32-year-old Tanvar Kahman and the 36-year-old Rome Mohammed was postponed to the 7th of June for a formal bail application.

A 42-year-old woman, who is the mother of one of the victims appeared in court as well but may not be named to protect the identities of the children.

Spokesperson, Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, says they were arrested in East London on Wednesday.

She says it is alleged that the arrested woman sold her 13-year-old daughter and her 15-year-old niece to Kahman and Mohammed for sexual exploitation.

The two teenagers were offered regularly to the suspects from February 2019 and March 2021, in exchange for money.

Captain Mgolodela says the youngest child has Down Syndrome.

The children were both taken to a place of safety in March this year.
