Mossel Bay woman hit by stray bullet from SAPS firearm

A woman from Mossel Bay is in a stable condition in hospital after being hit by a stray bullet from a police officer's gun on Tuesday morning.

Spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie says police were trying to apprehend two suspects in the early hours of Tuesday whilst on routine patrol in KwaNonqaba.

He says when officers instructed the men to stop they ignored police and continued walking.

Pojie says when police approached them, one of the suspects tried to attack him with a panga whilst his accomplice came from behind to try and disarm him.

During the struggle for the firearm two shots were fired and the suspects immediately fled the scene.

Pojie says during this time they heard a sound from a nearby house and discovered a 60-year-old woman who was wounded in the neck.

It is believed that she was struck by one of the bullets.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of attempted murder.
