"Mossel Bay riot no coincidence" DA

Riot police have their hands full at KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay, were a service delivery protest has spilled over into a third day.

Damage has already been put at hundreds of thousands of rands after rioters started burning municipal buildings and petrol bombed the offices of the Family Violence and Child Protection Unit in the township.

Protesters started targeting shops owned by foreign nationals and police had to make use of tear gas and stun grenades in order to control the rioting crowds.

More than 15 shops were vandalised by protestors while the house of a DA councillor was also targeted.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in Mossel Bay believes its no coincidence that the violence is taking place days before a by-election is to be held in a DA-held ward.

Ward 13 will also be contested by the ANC and ICOSA.

Piet Pretorius - DA Constituency Head Piet Pretorius says in a statement that a DA councillor had to vacate his house because of intimidation and threats to his family while the DA candidate in the upcoming by-election received an anonymous phone call, requesting her to withdraw as candidate.

Pretorium called on the leadership of the ANC and ICOSA to restrain their members in the area and to ensure that the rest of the campaign as well as the by-election runs smoothly and is free of intimidation, threats and violence.
