Mossel Bay police have welcomed the ruling by the magistrate's court to deny bail to suspects in two separate rape cases.
Correspondent Louise Karsten reports that in the one case bail was denied to a 62-year-old man for the alleged rape of a Grade One learner.
The first suspect, a 62-year old man, appeared for his bail application after he was arrested for the alleged rape of a grade one girl from Mossel Bay.
Angry community members recently took part in a protest march to the court to show their disapproval for granting the suspect bail. The man remains in custody.
In a separate case bail was also denied in the Mossel Bay Magistrate Court to a 30 year old man that is accused of allegedly raping a woman from
Hartenbos.
The 54-year old victim was allegedly raped a few weeks ago, in broad daylight. She was walking on the beach between Little Brak River and Hartenbos when the man approached her and raped her. The suspect fled from the scene and was arrested by members of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offense Unit shortly afterwards. The suspect remains in custody and will appear in court again in January
