Southern Cape police are combing the scene for clues after 42-year old Waldemar Strauss was shot and killed during a robbery at his house in Dana Bay, near Mossel Bay.
Police captain Bernadine Steyn says a number of men armed with guns and knives entered the house in Moquini Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
She says they tied up Strauss and his 38 year-old wife with belts before dragging her downstairs to open a safe on the ground floor.
The assailants also went to another room where they woke up Strauss' 11-year-old son but left a 7-year old boy sleeping.
Steyn says the 11 year old was taken to the main bedroom where his father was ordered to open a second safe - after which he was shot once in the head and died on the scene.
She says the gang fled on foot with several fire-arms, cellphones and jewellery.
