Mossel Bay drowning tragedy

File

A 21-year-old man is missing at Mossel Bay after disappearing underwater at Dias Beach.

The National Sea Rescue Institute says an extensive search was conducted on Sunday afternoon following a report of a drowning in progress.

Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said the Mossel Bay duty crew were conducting a routine exercise when they were called into action.

“The sea rescue craft Rescue 15, St Blaise Rescuer, and Rescue 15 Bravo were diverted to respond to the scene and our NSRI rescue vehicle (also) responded.”

He said on arrival on the scene a search commenced for a 21-year-old local man who was witnessed disappearing underwater at the backline after being swept out to sea while swimming with friends.

“The SA Police Services and Police Sea Borderline Unit attended on the scene. Despite an extensive search, there remains no sign of the man and a Police Dive Unit are continuing in an ongoing search operation,” Lambinon said.
