The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has arrested a constable and a civilian in Mossel Bay for assaulting a man, who is now in a coma.
Spokesperson, Moses Dlamini says it is alleged that on February 21, the constable tried to arrest a robbery suspect in Kwanonqaba, but the suspect stabbed the constable with a knife and ran away.
The constable then called for backup and after finding him, it is alleged that he assaulted the man.
Dlamini says the man was taken to the Criminal Investigation Department offices where the groundsman also assaulted him.
His head was bashed against the wall of the office which led to severe head injuries.
The man was taken by ambulance to George Schuur Hospital with brain, head and spinal injuries.
The pair is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay Magistrate's Court tomorrow on a charge of attempted murder.
