The Tourism Sector has been allocated R149 million over the next three years as part of the drive to increase the number of tourists visiting the Eastern Cape.
Research conducted for the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism shows that the percentage of foreign visitors to South Africa that travelled to the Eastern Cape had dropped from 6.6% in 2006 to just 3.7% in 2011.
Presenting the provincial budget on Thursday, Provincial Planning and Treasury MEC Phumulo Masualle said that through the Home of Legends project, the province had been able to market and brand the Eastern Cape as a tourist destination.
Masualle said the aim was to diversify the tourism base by improving accessibility to national parks, heritage sites and natural attractions, adding that the provincial government would also continue to enhance capacity in the hospitality industry.
