The assault trial of PE flight sergeant, Freddie Gordon, took another twist today when he requested that magistrate Chris Kruger step down.
Gordon, who was convicted in July of the brutal assault and rape of his wife, Avril, is representing himself during pre-sentencing proceedings which are underway in the Port Elizabeth magistrate's court.
Gordon was previously represented by counsel from the Legal Aid Board.
On Thursday morning he put in a written application for magistrate Kruger to step down, but Kruger refused, saying he saw no reason to do this.
The matter was adjourned for some time this morning so that Gordon could compile a list of witnesses who will testify on his behalf in mitigation of sentence.
