Port Elizabeth police have arrested 70 people in separate incidents since violence erupted in Nelson Mandela Bay townships at the weekend. The situation is currently tense but stable and there is a strong police presence.
The trouble started when a Somalian shop owner allegedly shot and killed a man outside a shop on Saturday night.
At least 10 shops in KwaZakhele and New Brighton were subsequently looted and seven men charged with public violence - and the shop owner - are due in court on Tuesday.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Marinda Mills says the other people arrested will appear in court shortly.
She says the looting of foreign owned Spaza shops continued on a sporadic basis on Monday night and incidents of looting were reported in the areas of Kwadesi, Missionvale, Swartkops, New Brighton and Motherwell.
"The major issue for us is that people understand the consequences of their actions and there is a huge criminal element involved here, they are seeing an opportunity and making use of people's emotions, therefore we will continue to arrest people and will not allow this lawlessness to continue" Mills said.
