Buffalo City officials were busy on Monday with mopping up operations after heavy weekend rain several hundred people without shelter following flooding in many parts of the Metro.

One person was reported to have died in a shack fire.

City spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya, said several hundred people from Ducats and Nompumulelo were moved to a community hall in Nompumulelo Informal Settlement, while 116 people from Duncan Village were provided shelter at the Gompo Hall.

The informal settlements affected also included Leaches Bay, Quinerra, Siya Skwatta Camp and East Bank.

“Eight shacks burnt down in the following areas, Duncan Village, Scenery Park, Ilitha Township and Nyanisweni location, with one fatality in Duncan Village,” he said.

Ngwenya said the flooding due to heavy rain and wind also resulted in homes being damaged, stormwater drains being blocked, due to illegal dumping, and these have since been cleared.

He said BCM also welcomed the assistance of their stakeholders including the NGO Gift of the Givers.
