A Port Elizabeth mother and her toddler died in a shack fire in the Danny Jordaan informal settlement in Bloemendal on Monday night.
Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says the 30-year-old woman and her three-year-old daughter could be heard frantically screaming for help at about 10 pm.
She says when neighbours went outside their shack was already in flames.
The deceased are unknown at this stage and police are trying to find the next of kin.
Police will now investigate the cause of the fire.
