'Misunderstanding’ over liquor leads to murder at EC shebeen

A misunderstanding over liquor led to the murder of a 29-year-old man in Ngqamakhwe, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“It is alleged that the deceased consumed the liquor of the suspect against the wish[es] of the suspect at a shebeen at Mzantsi Location, Mantunzeleni Village, Ngqamakhwe,” Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The incident took place at the shebeen at about 11pm on Saturday night, he said.

“The suspect drew his knife and stabbed the deceased on his upper body. The deceased died instantly. The murder was reported at Ngqamakhwe police station.”

Ngqamakhwe police officers acted swiftly to attend to the complaint, and a 30-year-old man was arrested not far from the shebeen.

He was charged with murder and would appear in the Ngqamakhwe Magistrate’s Court on Monday, Manatha said.
