Transport Minister, Dipuo Peters, has sent well wishes to the Kwazulu Natal couple who were seriously injured in a light plane crash at East London airport on Wednesday.
Minister Peters praised Eastern Cape Health and Emergency Services for their rapid response to the crash scene.
Kwazulu Natal businessman, Willem Nieuwenhuis and his wif Sanja, sustained serious injuries in the crash which destroyed their five-seater single-engined Maule.
Their three children sustained light injuries.
Minister Peters said that the circumstances surrounding the plan crash will be investigated.
Airports Company of South Africa spokesperson Colin Naidoo said the small private aircraft crash-landed on the main runway at East London airport at around 10-45am on Wednesday.
The crash led to the closure of the main runway at EL airport for several hours.
It's believed that strong winds may have contributed to the accident.
