The driver of a minibus has been arrested on charges of drunk driving, reckless driving and culpable homicide, following a fatal accident on Monday on the R72 between East London and Port Alfred.
Provincial Traffic says preliminary reports indicate that the driver of a Volkswagen Polo was travelling from Port Alfred towards East London when the minibus, travelling from the opposite direction and was busy turning right into the R346.
Spokesperson Unati Binqose says the minibus driver turned right in front of the Polo resulting in a collision in the middle of the road.
The driver of the Polo died on the scene.
The driver of the minibus was arrested and is currently in the police holding cells in Kidds Beach where he will appear in court soon.
Meanwhile, Police in the Chris Hani District Municipality held a multidisciplinary operation over the Easter Weekend where they focused on areas such as Ngcobo, Komani, Sterkstroom and Ilinge.
Police Spokesperson Captian Namhla Mdleleni says a total of 207 arrests were made, mostly for drunk driving and not complying with lockdown regulations.
He says 94 motorists were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.
They are expected to appear in different Magistrates courts soon.
