Millions to be spent on cultivating land

The Department of Rural Development in the Eastern Cape says R800m will be spent on cultivating 300-thousand hectars of land across the province for the summer planting season.

The Department says the amount includes a financial injection from the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries wih the aim of ensuring that decisive steps are taken to develop the Eastern Cape into the food basket of the country.

MEC Zoleka Capa says food security initiatives in the province will be coordinated across all sector departments, municipalities, NGO's and private sectors.

She says the Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform in the Eastern Cape is mandated to support poor and vulnerable households in rural areas.
