Eastern Cape municipalities fail to spend conditional grants

Eastern Cape municipalities had a total of R1.6 billion in unspent conditional grants in their bank accounts at the end of the 2010/11 financial year, according to figures released this morning by Statistics South Africa.
The Financial Census for Municipalities for the Financial Year ending June 30, 2011, shows that Buffalo City had the largest total of unspent grants with R346.1 million, followed by Nelson Mandela Bay with R309.2 million.
The Chris Hani District Municipality failed to spend R204.8 million of the conditional grants it received, while the Amathole District Municipality still had R144.5 million of grant money unspent at the end of the financial year.
