Millions of rands worth of mohair stolen in two hijackings

Thieves have stolen millions of rands worth of mohair in two truck hijackings in Port Elizabeth in the past month.

Police said that around 11 pm on Wednesday night a truck carrying mohair was hijacked by two men in a VW Polo at the intersection of the M4 freeway and Uitenhage Road.

Spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, said a white VW Polo pulled up in front of the driver and two suspects emerged and pointed a gun at him.

She said he was forced into the car and blindfolded and driven around for several hours before being dropped off unharmed at Njoli Square in Kwazakhele.

Janse Van Rensburg said the driver alerted police who found the truck at around 03h20.

She said the hijackers took 55 bales of mohair valued at between R1.2 and R2m.

The mohair was being transported from Komani to Port Elizabeth.

Janse Van Rensburg said this was the second hijacking of a mohair truck in the past two weeks.

A truck carrying bales of mohair valued at around R2m was hijacked at Despatch on the 19th of September and the empty vehicle was later recovered in Graaff-Reinet.

No arrests have yet been made and anyone with information is asked to contact their nearest police station.
