The Eastern Cape Department of Education said it would cost an estimated R110m to rebuild structures damaged by arsonists at the Reuben Birin Special Needs School in Algoa Park in Port Elizabeth.
Officials from the Department led by Superintendent-General, Themba Kojana, met with stakeholders and parents on Monday.
The school, which caters for hearing impaired learners has suffered badly at the hands of criminals in recent months, including break-ins and thefts as well as several buildings which were set alight in March.
Speaking at the meeting, an employee of the Department of Public Works said the damage estimate is around R110m and it would take up to a year to repair the damaged structures.
Concern was also raised about general safety because zinc roof sheeting could be blown off in strong winds and seriously injure or even kill a person.
Kojana told the meeting that money was not easily accessible in a situation where a building is damaged due to arson, adding that it could take months to get such funding.
He said he would have to motivate to the Eastern Cape cabinet for the money.
