The South African National Defence Force is gearing to open up a Military Base Hospital in Port Elizabeth to meet the health care demands of the military community in the Eastern Cape.

SANDF spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Phillip Makopo said the development started over a year ago and will be completed in 2024.

The Military Health Service currently has three Tertiary Health institutions in the country, one in Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Cape Town (1, 2 and 3 Military Hospital.)

Lieutenant-Colonel, Makopo says the project is expected to be handed over in March 2024.

Speaking during an oversight visit to health care facilities in PE on Wednesday, Makopo said they were happy with the progress.

He said great construction progress had already been achieved since the inception of the project.

He added that the hospital would serve both the internal and external military stakeholders.
