The Eastern Cape Health Department says one of the 20 people who were seriously injured in explosion and fire at a Middelburg factory, has died in hospital.
Department spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, says a female patient died of her injuries in Port Elizabeth's Dora Nginza Hospital on Wednesday night.
More than 30 people had suffered burns following the blast and subsequent fire at the Rolfe Laboratories factory in Middelburg on Monday.
Kupelo says some of the patients are likely to be discharged from Dora Nginza on Friday.
"Four others were referred to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane, East London due to bed availability. He says one patient is being treated in ICU at Livingstone Hospital.."
Rolfe Laboratories, which has been operating in Middelburg for around four decades, employs more than 300 people at the Middelburg facility.
The exact cause of the explosion and subsequent fire is still under investigation.
