Metro to spend millions to upgrade security at cemeteries in Nelson Mandela Bay

Fence erected around the cemetery in Despatch

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be spending R40 million rand to upgrade the security and development of cemeteries across the City.

Mayoral Committee Member for Public Health, Lance Grootboom, says this will be completed before the end of the year.

He was speaking in Despatch on Monday, where he inspected the newly completed R6 million fencing project around the local cemetery.

Grootboom says Nelson Mandela Bay's plans include fencing of all cemeteries following concerns that were raised by residents of access control, animals loitering in cemeteries and vandalism.

He says the fence is to restore dignity not only for those buried there or for the families of the deceased who want to spend time visiting the graves.
