Metro to fork out R20 000 to clean the Queen

The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality has laid a charge with the police on the damage caused to the Statue of Queen Victoria in the Port Elizabeth City Centre.

The statue was covered in green paint during the night in the latest attack on colonial and apartheid era monuments and statues around the country.

Municipality spokesperson Roland Williams says they've covered the statue with canvas and are looking at having it cleaned.

He says it will take about 2 weeks to complete the job and will come at a cost of about R20 000.

The metro strongly condemned the vandalising of the Statue of Queen Victoria and stressed again that their are systems in place whereby people can use the right channels to object to statues and heritage sights they may deem to be offensive.
