Nelson Mandela Bay executive mayor Benson Fihla, says the establishment of the Metropolitan Police Force is well underway and will take off within the next couple of months.
Speaking at his first official media briefing on Tuesday, 81-year old Fihla said a plan has been developed.
He says a team is working hard behind the scenes to make this a reality and that a Metro Police Plan has been developed.
"Some of the required staff have already been trained by the Municipality and we have existing infrastructure that can be used for the operation of the new force. The identification of funding will be concluded to make sure that the new force will be viable," he said.
Mayor Fihla said the "appointment of a Metro Police Chief will receive priority while consultation with stake holders, and a needs analysis will be concluded. This plan will be tabled before the Standing Committee for Safety and Security on Thursday," he said.
