Metro police in Nelson Mandela Bay arrested a 27-year-old man on Friday after his failed attempt to allegedly bribe officers during a crime prevention operation in Motherwell.
The man was a passenger in a car that was stopped during the operation along Addo Road where upon investigation and verification it was discovered that he did not have legal documentation as a foreign national in the country.
Acting Commissioner advocate Andrew Moses said: “He offered our officers a bribe and insisted that one of them takes the money and make a plan so that they can proceed to work.
“He was detained at Swartkops SAPS and is facing two charges, one for bribery and the other for being in the Republic illegally.
“The good work of our officers is commended.
They effected an arrest of an illegal foreigner and honoured their oath of office by not accepting a bribe but rather arresting the offender. Well done to them, this is a strong message to say we will not be corrupted as NMBM Metro Police.
We still serve with pride.”
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
