The hunt is on for a new superintendent general for the Eastern Cape Health Department.
The contract of Dr Siva Pillay has not been renewed and he officially steps down on Friday.
Pillay's departure comes amid claims by state doctors that health services in the PE Hospital Complex has all but collapsed.
This week 30 specialists released a detailed statement on the staffing crisis in all medical departments, warning that certain, essential tertiary services cannot be rendered effectively.
The doctors also laid the blame for the crisis at the door of the Eastern Cape Health Department, which they say has done little to avert the crisis.
