Metro dams could be unusable by June if it does not rain

Nelson Mandela Bay faces the chilling prospect of its main supply dams being unusable by June if the big rains don't come soon.

The Metro's four main supply dams are currently hovering at around 16% of total combined capacity.

Weather office spokesperson Garth Sampson says residents were still using too much water and that the crisis is very real.

He says people are under the impression that the Nooitgedacht Water Treatment Scheme will solve our problems which is far from the truth because it only supplies 160 megalitres.

Sampson further cautioned that the seasonal forecast is not looking good either.

However, there is the prospect of some good rain on Sunday, into Monday as a cold front passes south of the country.

He says this rain will be good for our water tanks, predicting a conservative 10-20mm over the next three to five days.

The Metro says there is a water demand of 280 megalitres per day, while the City can only supply 230 megalitres per day.

This has been a particularly thorny issue for residents in the Western Suburbs who are without water or experience low pressure on a regular basis.

On Thursday, the metro said they were battling to meet the demand to large parts of the Western side of the City due to the low storage levels at Chelsea and Greenbushes reservoirs which are both at 5%.
