An argument with her boyfriend on New Year's Day 2001 prompted 13-year-old Angela Harris to write a message and place it in a bottle which she then buried on a Mossel Bay beach.
Fourteen years later, avid treasure hunter Michael de Nobrega, using his metal detector, was excited to find the bottle.
He published pictures on his Facebook page leading the Mossel Advertiser to begin a search for the letter writer.
Harris, who lived in Port Alfred before moving to Mossel Bay, felt like doing something after an argument with her boyfriend.
The single mom said that she was quite surprised when contacted about the discovery of the letter.
She says she's hoping to meet De Nobrega soon.
"He has a house in Plett and I would like to go there sometime to meet up with him and his fiance" she said
The letter, which dates 1 Jan 2001, stated, "I want you to look after these things for me and please write to me... I would love to have another friend in my life!"
