Message from the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta
As the year 2011 approaches its end, we look back with thanks to both our members and the community of the Eastern Cape at large, for the successes we achieved in the fight against crime. The milestones accomplished leave us with confidence for 2012 and with the noble resolve to continue making the Eastern Cape a safer place to live in.
Therefore it is important that the slogan "Fighting crime - it begins with me! - is embedded in the hearts and minds of young and old, in order for us to steadily proceed towards creating a crime free society.
Once again a big thank you to the public for being our eyes and ears and informing us of criminal activities, as many of our breakthroughs come due to the generation of information from the public and informer networks. We also appreciate the support that we continue to receive from our Community Police Forum structures. Their efforts and those of our reservists in ensuring that crime in this Province is reduced, cannot go unnoticed.
The festive season is meant for relaxation but at the same time we urge the public to please make responsible decisions with regard to their personal safety. The safeguarding of your own safety and that of your property should always be the first consideration.
The abuse of alcohol can be related to almost 60 percent of our contact crimes and this is due to the fact that it negatively influences decision making processes and have an impairing impact on the normal functioning of the human body. It is important that we keep this in mind when we plan our activities and excursions.
The protection of our children must remain the priority of parents and caregivers, and often during this time of the year, children are left alone without the necessary supervision. This has devastating consequences which includes children becoming victims of sexual assault, neglect, drowning, and car accidents etc.
A special word of thanks to all those police officials who will be working during this time, and for the diligence and commitment displayed towards their duties, sometimes under very difficult work circumstances.
I would like to end by wishing one and all, a peaceful and joyous festive season, as we continue to squeeze crime to zero in the Province.
Uthixo Anisikelele, God bless, Gods rykste seën.
