Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Mabuyane, said the business sector has been a pillar of strength for the Bhisho government in the battle against the Coronavirus.
The Premier received a consignment of Personal Protective Equipment as well as four vehicles from Mercedes Benz South Africa on Tuesday.
Speaking during his weekly media briefing, he said the business sector not only kept “paying salaries utilising the UIF”, but he said many were also providing food to the most vulnerable while others were providing PPE’s.
“Today, Mercedes-Benz SA is joining these patriotic companies in their humanitarian gesture by donating much-needed personal protective equipment in the war against Covid-19,” Mabuyane said.
“What we did not expect are four vehicles that will be used by our officials to do their fieldwork on Covid-19. Our fight against the virus is now powered by yet another reputable good corporate citizen with German roots,” he added.
Mabuyane was referring to the more than R100m that the German government, via VWSA ploughed into a field hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay while also providing PPE’s and other support to the province’s health sector.
The Premier said the donation of 3D printed face shields, surgical masks, hand sanitisers by Mercedes Benz SA, would help prevent more infections among health-care workers.
