Four young men will appear in the Mossel Bay Regional Court on Monday on charges of rape.
The alleged incident happened at the Mossel Bay Correctional Youth Centre.
A 19-year old trial awaiting prisoner was allegedly raped in July last year in front of all his fellow prisoners.
The victim, who is originally from Knysna, was awaiting trial on a charge of robbery.
According to a reliable source, the victim was sleeping when he was awakened by the four inmates.
The suspects allegedly started strangling him and assaulted the young man. They undressed him and allegedly took turns raping the victim.
He sustained internal injuries and injuries to his neck.
A spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services in the Southern Cape, Fanie Gouws confirmed the incident shortly after it had happened.
Gouws said the correctional officer who was on duty at the time of the incident, immediately acted when he became aware of what
was happening inside the cells.
