Police in Gqebehra have opened an inquest docket into a shack fire that claimed the lives of three members of a local family.
Spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the tragic incident occurred on Monday night in an informal settlement in Motherwell.
She said 11-year-old Iminati Nkumba was sent by his mother on an errand to her older daughter’s place nearby.
Naidu said about 20 minutes later, the young woman heard the community screaming, and when she went to investigate, saw that her parent's shack was on fire.
She said the blaze claimed the lives of 41-year-old Mnyamezelo Msizi, 47-year-old Noxolo Nkumba, and Imanathi.
Naidu said the fire department extinguished the blaze and the cause is still unknown.
