Media executive Willem Breytenbach granted bail under strict conditions

Alleged sex offender Willem Breytenbach has been granted bail of R50 000 in the Cape Town magistrate's court.

The former teacher and Media 24 executive was arrested on Tuesday in Hartenbos near Mossel Bay and for now faces two charges, one of indecent assault for an incident back in 1997 and a second charge of sexual assault which allegedly happened in 2017.

Breytenbach's arrest also comes in the wake of regular podcasts by Johannesburg-based copywriter, Deon Wiggett, one of the complainants in the matter.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, says the state did not oppose his bail which also came with strict conditions.

He must surrender his passport, he may not set foot in any home affairs office and must also report to the police in Klein Brak Rivier in the Mossel Bay area.

Ntabazalila says he must do this three times a week, on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 7 am and 7 pm.

He may not communicate with the witnesses directly or indirectly and not even on social media.

If Breytenbach needs to travel outside of Klein Brak he needs to inform the investigating officer.
