MEC to visit "worst township" in South Africa

Eastern Cape Human Settlements MEC, Helen Sauls-August will visit the MK SilverTown housing project on Friday, as part of her oversight in checking on the progress of housing projects in the province.

Department spokesperson, Lwandile Siwetcha says the purpose of the visit is to identify and unblock challenges in an effort to fast track delivery of houses in the area.

"This is a project that was started in 2009 and should have been finished by now. The project has got 269 housing units that were supposed to be built and she is there to check if those houses have been built and how many have been completed" she said.

According to Statistics South Africa, Silvertown informal settlement in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth is one of the few areas that have not been improved since 1994.

SSA says more than 1,700 people live in over 500 dwellings in the township and approximately 96 percent of residents use the bucket toilet system.
