Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Thandiswa Marawu, has called upon parents to make use of safe vehicles for scholar transport.
This follows the recent accident in Mbizana, where a bakkie ferrying learners was involved in a fatal crash, killing 5.
The department says in a statement Marawu has instructed all provincial and municipal traffic officials to implement the integrated law enforcement plan for scholar transport, which was developed last week.
The plan includes dedicated special operations, focusing on the fitness of vehicles involved in the scholar transport service, as well as those ferrying the public.
It also includes all scholar transport vehicles, whether contracted by One Future Development 46, or contracted privately by families, to be subjected to a compulsory test at Vehicle Testing Stations to be checked for roadworthiness.
