Eastern Cape Rural Development MEC, Zoleka Capa has called for calm among farmers that are affected by a recent outbreak of army worms that are destroying maize in parts of the OR Tambo District Municipality.
She says a team from her department is currently spraying pesticides to the affected areas in a bid to control the worms.
The MEC has called for the formation a task team to ensure that the outbreak is controlled and preventative measures across the Province are made.
Agri SA's Jaap Grobbelaar says army worms are a real threat to crops.
"An army worm will consume anything that has green in it , an outbreak is usually only every 5-6 years and can cause major problems for crops" Grobbelaar said.
