Members of the police's K9 unit in Nelson Mandela Bay have netted abalone of approximately R3-million.

Police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge said a 28-year-old man had been arrested following the operation on Wednesday afternoon.

Captain Beetge said the K9 members spotted a suspicious blue Toyota Hilux bakkie traveling on the N2 close to the Stanford Road turn off.

"The members were assisted by the Flying Squad and Walmer Crime Prevention Units to pull off the vehicle on the N2," Beetge said.

"On searching it they discovered 46 black bags filled with abalone [and] the 28 year old male driver was subsequently arrested for the illegal possession of abalone."

Captain Beetge said the bakkie was then taken to the Mount Road police station where they were assisted by Sea Fisheries members to count and process the abalone.

According to police, a total of 35 bags containing 4387 wet abalone, and 10 bags containing 4412 dried abalone was counted and processed. The estimated street value of the abalone is about R 3 million.

The Toyota Hilux bakkie was also confiscated and will be analysed by forensics.

Captain Beetge said the suspect would appear in court soon.
