Swift action by Gqeberha police leads to recovery of stolen goods

A 40-year-old man is due to appear in court in Gqeberha soon following his arrest on a charge of hijacking, and for being in the possession of suspected stolen goods.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said he was arrested earlier this week, barely two hours after a truck was hijacked on the M17 in Motherwell, and the stolen goods recovered.

She said the incident happened on Tuesday afternoon when the driver had stopped to inspect the refrigerator at the back of the truck when he was accosted by an unknown number of men who arrived in two cars.

However, he managed to flee after being ordered to get into one of the cars.

Naidu said as soon as police received the information they picked up a faint tracker signal and spotted the truck in a street in Unit 12.

“The suspects were busy offloading it and when they saw police, they scattered. One suspect was arrested inside the house.

“All the stock containing dairy products (cheese, sauces, and milk) valued at about R2.2 million were recovered,” she said.

Police are still searching for the remaining suspects.

District Commissioner, Major-General Vuyisile Ncata warned that buying or receiving stolen property is an offence.
