The Hawks have been tasked to investigate a drug syndicate following a massive bust on the N1 in Beaufort West on Tuesday where thousands of Mandrax tablets were confiscated.
National Spokesperson for the Hawks Brigadier Vish Naidu says a multi-disciplinary task team was involved to uncover the syndicate who is believed to be manufacturing and bulk supply of mandrax tablets to local dealers in the Western Cape.
Naidu says Crime Intelligence worked tirelessly to track down the source of the tablets which led them a consignment being dropped off in Gauteng which was then being couriered to the Western Cape.
The vehicle was travelling on the N1 from Gauteng to the Western Cape when it was pulled over by the K9 unit in the Karoo.
At this stage, only the driver of the vehicle was arrested but more are expected.
Naidu says police also confiscated the vehicle to search for any other narcotics before they will determine the value.
A total of 27 000 tablets were found on the scene.
