Two men in their thirties are in police custody following their arrest on the N10 near Cookhouse on Monday night.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli says the suspects, aged 32 and 36 drew the attention of Highway Patrol officers when they were speeding past them in their Audi A4 station wagon.
He says this led to the discovery of abalone with an estimated value of R1.3 million.
Nkohli says officers called for backup and they managed to pull over the vehicle about 20 km away.
Upon searching the vehicle officers found 14 plastic bags full of abalone.
A total of 7 615 units of abalone were seized.
The suspects will be charged for contravening the Marine Living Resource Act 18 of 1998 Reg 36 – illegal possession of abalone.
