Massive abalone bust in luxury vehicle near Graaff-Reinet

Two suspects are in police custody after abalone worth over R3 million was found in their possession on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu says local police received intel about a blue Toyota Camry and a Porche Cayenne with a trailer that is travelling along the R75 from Kariega towards Graaff-Reinet, with illegal abalone.

She says members from Cookhouse and Graaff-Reinet responded and proceeded from the N10 towards the R63.

Colonel Naidu says the Camry was stopped at the intersection of Graaff-Reinet-Pearston-Jansenville but the drivers of the Porche continued to speed off.

She says officers from Graaff-Reinet blocked off the road and when the occupants noticed the blue lights they stopped next to the road and fled into the bushes.

Colonel Naidu says a total of 75 bags of abalone consisting of 9 398 units were confiscated as well as both vehicles.

She says the suspects are both from Cape Town and will appear in the Graaff Reinet Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The suspect in custody were occupants of the Camry.
