State is scratching for evidence against Arnold Terblanche says defence

Gqeberha murder accused Arnold Terblanche is expected back in court this month as a trial date is yet to be set for the murder of his estranged wife, Vicki.

Terblanche, who is currently out on bail of R1 million spent 15 months in prison for a crime, he says he did not commit.

Vicki's boyfriend at the time, Reinhardt Leach, is currently facing a murder charge while his accomplice, Dylan Cullis is already serving an 18-year sentence for his role in the crime.

It is abundantly clear in evidence before the court that Arnold was never present when Vicki was murdered nor was he involved in the dumping of her body.

He is now full of confidence that the matter against him will be dismissed as he has nothing to hide.

This is according to his legal representative Alwyn Griebenow who was a guest on the Algoa FM News Exclusive Podcast, Journey to Justice.

He says his client should have been granted bail from the outset and claims that Magistrate Kriban Pillay, who denied bail twice, was misled by the State.

Griebenow says during the first bail application, the State created the impression that they had supporting affidavits substantiating the allegations against Arnold, but this was a lie.

He further states that allegations that conversations between Arnold and Leach were hidden cannot be true as Arnold handed over his phone on the night he was arrested.

Griebenow says there were three people present when Vicki was murdered, Leach, Cullis and Mario De Ridder Jnr, who is a section 204 witness.

He says in his affidavit Leach pointed a finger at Culllis, who in his plea agreement put the blame for the murder on Leach.

Arnold's defence also poked holes in Cullis' plea agreement, pointing out some inconsistencies related to the conversation that took place inside the vehicle where Vicki's body was in the boot.

In his plea, Cullis stated that Leach made a phone call to someone to inform them that the "deed was done" before claiming that the "husband was playing dumb".

Voice Note

Griebenow says they are in possession of a voice note that Leach sent to Arnold during that exact time.

He says this voice note was in the State's possession but they never bothered to consider it as it would not fit into the plea of Cullis.

In the voice note, Leach informs Arnold that Vicki was not herself as she was taking a lot of drugs and telling people that she could see into their future as she could communicate with spirits.

He also said that she was constantly on the phone with other people and that it was not a good environment for him or their minor son to be in.

He added that he found Vicki in a room with another man and left the house after a huge argument and that she (Vicki) was now missing.

Griebenow further states that the plea by Cullis was an extra-curial statement by one accused that is inadmissible against his co-accused.

He says for this to carry any weight, Leach would have to testify.

Griebenow further states that he would not hesitate to put Arnold on the stand.

Vicki's body was found in a shallow grave in October of 2021, suffocated to death.
