Manhunt launched for CIT robbers

supplied

Eastern Cape police are hunting for the gang who attacked and blew up a cash-in-transit vehicle on the R411 between Mqanduli and Viedgiesville on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said the G4 security vehicle was travelling from Elliotdale after a collection when it came under fire from gunmen in two double-cab bakkies.

He said they also wore bullet-proof vests.

Kinana said after forcing the truck to stop, the gang hauled the security officers out and packed the truck with explosives before blowing up the vehicle.

He said the gang also blocked the flow of traffic on the road while they carried out the heist, fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash and the firearms taken from the security officers.

Police said the two sustained injuries from the debris as a result of three explosions.

Kinana said the suspects then fled in the direction of Ngqeleni, while the security officers were taken to hospital for treatment
