Port Elizabeth police are investigating a shooting incident at Kenako Mall in Struandale on Friday, during which a man was wounded.
Spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says preliminary investigations indicate that two private security guards were monitoring ATM’s at the mall for card scammers.
She says some suspicious men were seen near an ATM and when the guards approached them, they started running into the crowd.
Naidu says it is alleged that one of the security officials was disarmed, and when his partner came to his assistance, the suspect threatened him with the firearm.
The security official fired shots at the suspect, wounding him twice.
The 59-year old man was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police are investigating cases of attempted murder, robbery and pointing of a firearm.
