The Eastern Cape Department of Health says it is ready to roll out the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it becomes available.
It says this is contrary to reports that this would only happen in April.
Department spokesperson, Siswe Kupelo says as soon as vaccines are available, phase one of the rollout, which is targeted at health workers, will begin.
He says stock is expected to arrive in the province in February.
Health MEC, Sindiswa Gomba earlier said that the provincial government was working around the clock to ensure the mass rollout of the vaccine went ahead with little to no hurdles.
The provincial government is targeting 3.7-million people in order to achieve herd immunity.
This will be done in six to nine months.
MEC Gomba said the department would use its mobile health services to access rural areas.
